As you are aware, the Government has announced all public schools in Western Australia will remain open until the end of term – Thursday, 9 April 2020. However, families are now encouraged to keep their children at home if they have the capacity to do so. We understand that parents who work in essential service areas may not be able to comply with this.

Although the Department of Education and schools are unsure of what this means for Term 2 schooling, Rivergums PS is proactively transitioning to the online teaching and learning platform, Connect.

Connect is a learning, support and communications platform developed by the Department of Education WA for staff, students and parents in public schools. Check out the short video clip on Connect:

Students and parents will access Connect with their own secure login. The student login is the same username and password that students would use to log into the computers at school. Teachers have sent out student login details out via Dojo or email. Parents can sign into Connect using their unique P-Number.

Connect is totally free and, because it is provided by the Department of Education, very safe. As well as being able to log into Connect on any internet-connected device, you may also receive notices from Connect that will be sent to you as either an email or a notification on your phone. A free app called Connect Now can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store and will let you receive Connect notices as push notifications.

Will I need any other programs?

Connect is accessed via a web browser like Chrome or Safari. Teachers will also provide links to various other online resources on Connect.

Your child may need Microsoft Office programs like Word or PowerPoint to complete their work. Luckily, the department of education provides each student with licenses to download and use the Office 365 programs or apps. When will my child’s teacher be contactable?

Teachers will do their best at responding to questions, issues and comments in a timely manner. Please be patient as teachers are getting used to teaching using the platform also. Teachers will respond to queries during teaching hours of 8:30am-3.30pm (Mon-Fri).

Please note: Week 9/10 of Term 1 is a trial run for what Term 2 could look like. There is every chance that we will experience some difficulties with the system as it’s the first time most students in the state will be accessing the site from home simultaneously.
