Physical Education is an essential subject in the Western Australian Curriculum and is taught for a minimum of 120 minutes throughout the school, Kindy – Year 6 over the course of a week. Rivergums Primary School is fortunate to offer the community two specialist Physical Education teachers that provide students with a vast level of opportunities as they develop their physical abilities and progress through primary school.
In Physical Education, students learn how to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts. The Physical Education curriculum offers students an experiential program that is contemporary, relevant, challenging, enjoyable and physically active.
In addition to direct instructional time with a specialist teacher, students in Yr 3 – 4 take part in Middle School Sport every Thursday afternoon for 60 minutes under the supervision classroom teachers and a PE specialist teacher. For the Yr 5 – 6 students Senior School Sport occurs every Friday afternoon and is structured the same with two year levels all participating in organised sport during a specific time.
Faction Carnivals
- Term 1: Faction Swimming Carnival
- Term 2: Faction Cross Country Carnival
- Term 3: Interm Swimming Lessons
- Term 4: Faction Athletics Carnival
On the 28th October we had our first whole school carnival.
Kindys came out to join in the parade and then participate in their running race. They then headed off to run a mini carnival in the early childhood area. By all accounts everyone had a great time.
The Pre-primary-6 then rotated through 12 different activities for the rest of the day. Activities that included leaderball, tunnelball, passball, tug of war, long Jump, discus, javelin, flag race, relays, shot put, hurdles, sack Race and sprints.
Each activity lasted for about 20minutes and the group rotated around to the activity. Factions earned points for their faction based on a collective total from all participants.
At the end of the day we finished with a Parent/Student/teacher race which was great.
Our Individual champions were acknowledged with the overall champion faction announces.
Great day and thank you to all staff and parents helpers on the day.

What a day!
It was brilliant to see so many students from all eight schools competing against each other demonstrating great sportsmanship along the way.
We had some 50 students participate in all events throughout the day. Each students showed the Rivergums Spirit and did their best. Students competed in at least 3 events each ranging from long jump, javelin, triple Jump, 100/200/400m running, tunnelball, leaderball, passball and relays.
This year’s winner was Tuart Rise Primary School and we came 6th.
Congratulations to all our competitors for a fantastic day. Thank you to Mrs Thwaites, Mrs Nasi and Ms Underwood for getting all the students ready for their events. Couldn’t have done it without you ladies.
Thanks Matt Smith
Our carnival this year was held over 2 spectacular days.
21st October saw students compete in all the championship events. The participants on the day were selected based on the students’ performance during trials in the lead up to the carnival. The top 2 students in each faction/year group and sex were to compete against the other factions.
All students who competed on the day did a fantastic job. The way they tried their hardest and demonstrated great sportsmanship during the event was exceptional.
Thank you to Baldivis Secondary College for being able to support our day with students running each of the events.
